William Torrey Harris

William Torrey Harris (September 10, 1835 – November 5, 1909) was an American educator, philosopher, and lexicographer. William Torrey Harris devised a classification system for the St. Louis Public School Library and presented the idea as "Book Classification" in The Journal of Speculative Philosophy in April, 1870. Dewey actually adapted the process from Mr. W.T. Harris for his DDC, who had utilized a similar but cruder scheme in the St. Louis Public Library.
