Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (5 September 1888 – 17 April 1975) was an Indian philosopher and statesman who was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. After independence, the first significant step taken by the Government of India in the field of education was the appointment of the University Education Commission or popularly known as Radhakrishnan Commission in 1948 under the Chairmanship of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. The commission clearly defined the role of libraries and librarians in maintaining higher standards in teaching and examination. The Radhakrishnan Commission (1948-49) expressed that “the library is the heart of all the university’s work".
