Charles Ammi Cutter

Charles Ammi Cutter (March 14, 1837 – September 6, 1903) was an American librarian. The Cutter Expansive Classification system (1893) is a library classification system devised by Charles Ammi Cutter. The Rules for a Dictionary Catalogue first appeared in print in 1876 which was authored by Charles Ammi Cutter. We are indebted to Cutter for the concepts of direct entry, the use of natural language, and the syndetic structure (cross-references) meant to compensate for the "scattering" of related topics in the dictionary catalogue.
